The Side Lake Community is comprised of two adjacent townships, divided by the St. Louis County and Itasca County line. The Town of French is in St. Louis County.

Side Lake is 26 miles north of Hibbing on County Road 5, 85 miles northwest of Duluth and 220 miles north of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Chisholm, known as the heart of the Iron Range, began to boom in the early 1900′s. A fire nearly wiped out the community in 1908, but the perseverance of the townspeople carried them through.  The city was rebuilt and continues to celebrate this “rebirth” with their annual Fire Days Celebration in September. Today, Chisholm’s population is just shy of 5,000 people.
